Electrochemical disinfection is a new disinfection process friendly to environment. The development of disinfection mechanisms and electrode materials in the last thirty years is reviewed. Electrochemical disinfection mechanisms include the chemical effects of active chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, active intermediates, copper or silver ions and the physical effect of electric field, respectively adopting titanium anodes, carbon cathodes, and PbO2 anodes etc. It is concluded that the selection of a proper electrode material according to targets and objects is an effective approach to improve disinfection efficiency. The main problems of present electrochemical disinfection are comparatively low current efficiency, the formation of scales on the cathode surface and the difficulty to control the disinfectant concentration etc.
