Abstract

Developments of membrane bioreactors (MBR) for wastewater treatment in foreign countrie are thoroughly reviewed. The scale and amount of MBR applied to wastewater treatment are expanding, however, membrane fouling is mainly the abstructive factor of applying MBR further to wastewater treatment. It is noted that air sparging in hollow fibre module is efficient for ameliorating membrane fouling, though there are many countermeasures of membrane fouling in MBR. The cost analysis shows that the application of MBR may be much cheaper in small/midscale wastewater treatment plants, but conventional activated sludge processes are more suitable for largescale wastewater treatment plants. The molecular biological technique allows us to study microbial community of membrane bioreactors at the genetic level.
