The combined SHARON (Single Reactor High Activity Ammonia Removal Over Nitrite)-ANAMMOX (Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation) process has un-substituted superiority in treating ammonium-rich wastewater characterized by lowering (super low) C/N ratio,up to 25% of the oxygen demand and saving 40% of the carbon demand. Some latest research findings and applications of the SHARON-ANAMMOX process have been reviewed. The control conditions for the SHARON process and the possible mechanism of the ANAMMOX have been summarized. The feasibility of the SHARON-ANAMMOX process realized in the way of immobilized microorganisms is discussed. The paper also puts the emphasis on the combined process in the future.
