The industrial PBTC(2 - phosphonobutane - 1,2,4 - tricarboxylic acid) product which has been made from dimethyl fumaric is analyzed by using chemical method, 13C NMR and 31P NMR techniques. It is indicated that there are by－product such as phosphonobutanedioic acid, partly hydrolyzed products of ester of PBTC, phosphonopropionic acid, 1 - phosphono - 1 - carboxyl - cycloamyl - 3 - ketone, H3PO3, H3PO4 and so on besides PBTC. They are mainly resulted from inadequacy and secondary reaction. These results will provide us with some useful information for seeking the optimal technological conditions of synthesizing PBTC and checking PBTC product quality.
