Abstract

An efficient yeast strain,Candada sp. WZFF.G一284 isolated from an active sludge and preserved in our laboratory, has been investigated for its ability to biodegrade wastewaters containing highly concentrated lipids by the experiments using an actual wastewater from a vegetable oil factory in Beijing in which salad oil is added as the sole carbon source and some simple inorganic salts in an open environment without any sterilization. The resups from the microbiological study and biochemical analysis including the living cell number, emulsifying capacity, lipase activity, residual oil,COD and BOD,show that the yeast strain has a strong capability to adapt the highly oily environment, grows fast, and rapidly degrades lipids and organic substances. The strain itself has significant contribution for emulsification, especially with its large amount of living cells, and at the same time synthesizes 21.5 g/L bioemulsifiers which has strong emulsifying potentials. Therefore, the treating system rapid1y transforms into a homogeneous situation of complete emulsification. The strain also produces effective extracellular lipase with an activity of 68.3 U/mL,and the enzyme is stable and could perform the hydrolysis function for a long period in the treating environment. The microbial technique of biodegradation of the wastewater with high lipid concentration could stably undergo at high operation loads of lipid. Through the carry-out of biodegrading treatment with the Candada strain, the contents of lipids,COD and BOD are quickly removed out for more 95%.
