Application of Fenton-like oxidation for advanced treatment of landfill leachate

Abstract

Abstract:

The treatment of waste leachate by membrane technology generates a large amount of concentrate which is difficult to treat. Advanced oxidation technologies such as Fenton can achieve full quantitative treatment of leachate， but there are problems such as low utilization of H₂O₂ and difficulties in catalyst separation. Fenton-like oxidation technology can overcome the defects of traditional Fenton technology by introducing solid catalysts. Granular heterogeneous catalyst（Fe-Cu-Ti loaded clay） was used as Fenton-like catalyst to treat MBR effluent of waste leachate， and performance of the catalyst in oxidative degradation of MBR effluent of waste leachate was investigated. The effects of initial pH， H₂O₂ dosage， catalyst dosage and reaction time on the COD degradation were investigated， as well as the possibility of catalyst regeneration. The experimental results showed that the COD removal rate of the MBR effluent could reach 68.5% with the initial pH of 3， the H₂O₂ dosage of 2% of the wastewater mass and the catalyst dosage of 40% of the wastewater mass for 2 hours. The catalyst was regenerated for 8 times and the COD removal rate was 62.2%， and the catalyst mass loss rate was 0.003 8%. Fenton-like reaction can effectively reduce the organic matter in the MBR effluent， which can be further coupled with the biochemical treatment unit， in order to economically and effectively meet the requirements of Standard for Pollution Control on the Landfill Site of Municipal Solid Waste（GB 16889—2008）， and achieve the goal of full quantitative treatment of waste leachate.

采用膜技术处理垃圾渗滤液时会产生大量难以处理的浓缩液。Fenton等高级氧化技术可实现对渗滤液的全量化处理，但存在H₂O₂利用率低、催化剂分离困难等问题。类Fenton氧化技术可通过引入固相催化剂来克服传统Fenton技术的缺陷。采用粒状的多相催化剂（负载Fe-Cu-Ti的黏土）作为类Fenton催化剂，以垃圾渗滤液的MBR出水为处理对象，研究该催化剂氧化降解垃圾渗滤液MBR出水的性能，考察初始pH、H₂O₂投加量、催化剂投加量及反应时间对COD降解效果的影响，以及催化剂再生利用的可能性。实验结果表明：在初始pH为3、H₂O₂投加量为废水质量的2%、催化剂投加量为废水质量40%的条件下反应2 h，对MBR出水的COD去除率可达68.5%。多相催化剂经再生利用8次后对COD的去除率可达62.2%，催化剂质量损失率为0.003 8%。类Fenton反应可有效降低MBR出水中的有机物，后续可进一步耦合强化生化处理单元，以经济有效地达到《生活垃圾填埋场污染物排放标准》（GB 16889—2008）要求，实现垃圾渗滤液的全量化处理目标。
